DESIGNED AND DELIVERED BY DR. ELESA ZEHNDORFER
Leadership academic, researcher, consultant, TEDx speaker & writer. Lecturer at TEE Executive MBA.
Elesa qualified as a personal trainer thirty years ago, and she has subsequently developed a deep appreciation for the role of physiology in driving self-leadership and team performance. She has a leadership-focused PhD from the Institute of Sport & Leisure Policy at Loughborough University. Elesa went on to lecture in sports & business faculties (with a principle focus on leadership) for two decades, combining a deep love of leadership theory with a granular, empirically informed application of physiology theory to fields as diverse as politics (how we vote), finance (how we trade & invest) and team performance (the corporate world).

WHAT IS BURNOUT?
Estimated to cost the global economy up to $2trillion, the World Health Organisation (WHO) incorporated burnout into its International Classification of Diseases in 2019. The WHO define burnout as an ‘occupational phenomenon’, rather than a medical condition, meaning that it essentially viewed as having originated from within the workplace.
Common symptoms of burnout include feeling helpless, trapped and/or defeated, feeling detached, feeling cynical & negative, experiencing self-doubt, and more frequent procrastinating & feelings of being overwhelmed. Feeling tired or drained most of the time, insomnia & disrupted sleep, are also common symptoms. Depending on age (due to the andropause or menopause) we may also become more vulnerable. Clearly, tackling burnout remains a priority for any organisation wishing to maximise productivity, employee wellness and performance.
THE RISKS
How common is burnout? In a February 2023 survey of 10,243 global workers by US think-tank Future Forum, 42% of respondents reported feeling burnt out. Similarly, a 2018 Gallup study of 7,500 US workers showed that 67% experienced burnout on the job. Another (May 2022) report from The Ohio State University showed that 66% of US working parents meet the criteria for burnout.
Amongst many other factors, the increase in burnout might be attributable to increasingly long workdays. An April 2022 survey of 32,924 global workers by ADP Research Institute, for example, showed that employees worked 8.5 hours of unpaid overtime each week, compared to 7.3 hours before the Covid-19 pandemic. The cost of re-hiring can be 1.5-2x the annual salary of the outgoing employee. That means that the cost of replacing employees lost to sick leave or resignation (due to burn out) can be substantial.
Sadly, diagnoses of burnout are at an all-time high. However, conversations around burnout have increased, with companies more willing to offer employees perks such as gym memberships and home-office expenses to counter it. That’s obviously a good thing. Overall, companies seem invested in funding burnout and wellness initiatives. So why are burnout rates still increasing?
The answer lies in the fact that many companies simply do not have the expertise or resources to develop meaningful interventions.
THE SOLUTION
This workshop offers a solution to this burnout problem. By learning the science behind burnout & wellness, you will become empowered to engage with practical daily solutions that keep you healthy, lowering your personal risk of burnout, & that of your team.
You will learn how to measure and analyse burnout across your team, using an empirically valid tool (the Maslach Burnout Inventory) which will enable you to engage with meaningful interventions. Finally, appreciating the need for well-developed proactive wellness programmes will lower overall organisational exposure to the high economic, financial & organisational cost of burnout.
